We are looking for a Conversational AI Engineer to design, build, and optimize AI-powered chatbots and voice assistants using Azure Bot Framework and Conversational Language Understanding (CLU). This role will focus on training, tuning, and analyzing AI models for voice-based interactions, ensuring seamless and intelligent user experiences. The primary focus of this role will be post-transcription. The voice to text side will be handled by another team.
The ideal candidate has expertise in natural language processing (NLP), Azure Cognitive Services – CLU specifically, and tuning and training a model that is receiving requests that were initiated within a voice IVR style platform.
**Hybrid in Vienna, VA; Pensacola, FL; or Winchester, VA 2 days per week**

A Conversational AI Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing the models within Azure Cognitive Services. Their work focuses on natural language understanding (NLU) and system integration to ensure smooth and effective human-AI interactions.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Computational Linguistics, or a related field; equivalent work experience may be considered
2+ years of experience developing conversational AI or chatbot systems, preferably within Azure Cognitive Services or similar NLP platforms
Hands-on experience training and optimizing Conversational Language Understanding (CLU) models, including intent classification, entity recognition, and multi-turn conversation handling
Familiarity with Azure Language Studio, LUIS, or other NLU tools for building and fine-tuning AI models
Understanding of speech AI concepts such as speech-to-text (STT) and text-to-speech (TTS); experience tuning models post-transcription preferred
Proven ability to conduct unit testing, regression testing, and A/B testing to validate and refine bot behavior
Proficient in debugging and resolving issues related to intent overlap, entity conflicts, and misclassification
Experience working with analytics tools to monitor chatbot performance and drive continuous improvement
Awareness of ethical AI practices and a commitment to maintaining compliance with organizational and regulatory guidelines
Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with software engineers, data scientists, and product teams
Self-motivated and eager to stay current with advancements in natural language processing (NLP), Azure AI services, and conversational AI trends
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present insights and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders
Ability to manage multiple priorities and perform other duties as assigned
