The Scientific Desktop Support Engineer provides hands-on desktop and end-user support within scientific research environments. This specialized role focuses on supporting researchers, laboratory staff, and scientific instrumentation across Windows, macOS, and Linux systems in a complex enterprise environment.

Hourly Rate: $33-40/hr.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Tier 2/3 desktop and end-user support for scientific and research staff.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in Windows, Mac, and Linux enterprise computing in an Active Directory environment, including associated system management tools.
  • Support conference room AV equipment and infrastructure.
  • Provide support for virtualization platforms and assist with environment-specific configurations.
  • Support and maintain networking hardware and software, including DHCP, Subnetting, DNS, VLANs, wireless, and LAN.
  • Provide support for VoIP, fax, multi-function copiers, large format printers, and other IT peripherals.
  • Support specialized scientific systems and instrumentation, working closely with research staff to troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for processes, procedures, and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with IT leadership, service desk, and other support teams to ensure efficient service delivery.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of relevant, applicable professional experience.
  • Subject matter expertise in macOS, Windows, and Linux operating systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage customer expectations and deliver high-quality customer service.
  • Experience in scientific computing end-user environments.
  • Hands-on experience with ServiceNow for queue management and ticket fulfillment.
  • Advanced knowledge and expertise supporting scientific researchers and their specialized systems and equipment.
  • BS, MS, or PhD degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering, Applied Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
