The Scientific Engineer Support Lead serves as the senior technical resource and team lead for desktop and end-user support operations within scientific research environments. This position provides leadership and advanced technical expertise to a small team supporting scientific researchers, specialized computing systems, and laboratory equipment across Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and guidance to a team of IT scientific support engineers, including assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and providing coaching and mentorship.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and provide advanced technical support and troubleshooting for complex desktop and end-user computing issues in scientific environments.
  • Act as the senior technician supporting research staff, addressing specialized computing and instrumentation needs.
  • Analyze recurring desktop support issues to identify root causes and implement preventive solutions.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of support processes, procedures, and troubleshooting steps to facilitate knowledge sharing and improve efficiency.
  • Operate as a subject matter expert in Windows, Mac, and Linux enterprise computing in an Active Directory domain, as well as associated system management tools.
  • Support and maintain common IT peripherals including VoIP, fax, multi-function copiers, large format printers, and scientific instrument controllers.
  • Provide support and troubleshooting for conference room AV equipment and infrastructure.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with networking hardware and software, including DHCP, Subnetting, DNS, VLANs, wireless, and LAN technologies.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with virtualization platforms relevant to scientific computing environments.
  • Collaborate with other IT teams to ensure integrated and timely support.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of relevant, applicable professional experience.
  • Experience leading small technical teams in complex computing environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage customer expectations and deliver high-quality customer service.
  • Subject matter expertise in macOS, Windows, and Linux operating systems.
  • Hands-on experience with ServiceNow for queue management and ticket fulfillment.
  • Experience in scientific computing end-user environments, including support for researchers and specialized systems.
  • Advanced knowledge and expertise supporting scientific researchers and their specialized equipment.
  • BS, MS, or PhD degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering, Applied Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
