The Systems Engineer supports the design, implementation, and maintenance of Linux server and virtualization environments within the enterprise data center. This role focuses on ensuring the stability, security, and performance of Linux-based infrastructure, primarily within Oracle Enterprise Linux (Red Hat Kernel) and VMware/Dell VxRail platforms. The position requires strong technical depth in Linux systems to maintain reliable, efficient, and secure operations.

Responsibilities

  • Strategy & Planning
    • Collaborate with the Lead Engineer and Server Infrastructure Manager to plan and maintain Linux server and virtualization infrastructure aligned with enterprise standards.
    • Support planning activities for future modernization or hybrid-cloud initiatives under the direction of the Server Infrastructure Manager.
    • Contribute to long-term modernization efforts, including evaluating automation frameworks, hybrid cloud strategies, and infrastructure-as-code tools as organizational maturity allows.
    • Work with Storage, Network, and Security teams to design integrated infrastructure solutions.
    • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for assigned Linux technologies and enterprise initiatives, providing advanced technical guidance to peers and support teams.
  • Operational Management
    • Administer and maintain Linux environments, including Oracle Enterprise Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and legacy CentOS systems.
    • Manage and monitor VMware vSphere and Dell VxRail clusters hosting Linux workloads, ensuring uptime, performance, and compliance.
    • Configure and maintain core Linux services such as DNS, NFS, SSH, system logging, and authentication integration (LDAP/Kerberos/Active Directory).
    • Implement and operate automation and configuration management tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or Satellite/Foreman to maintain consistency and reduce manual effort.
    • Maintain patch and configuration compliance through tools such as BigFix or equivalent solutions.
    • Monitor performance and capacity metrics using tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, or SolarWinds, proactively identifying and resolving issues.
    • Participate in troubleshooting, incident response, and root cause analysis for Linux-based systems, ensuring proper escalation and resolution.
    • Support maintenance windows, backup and restore validation, and disaster recovery testing to ensure operational resilience.
  • Project Planning and Implementation
    • Contribute to system upgrades, migrations, and standardization projects, including OS lifecycle management and security remediation.
    • Support automation and modernization initiatives such as developing golden images, baseline templates, and infrastructure-as-code adoption.
    • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, implementation plans, change records, and post-change validation reports.
  • Core Competencies
    • Linux platform engineering and administration (OEL/RHEL 8/9).
    • Virtualization management with VMware vSphere and Dell VxRail.
    • Automation and configuration management using Ansible, Puppet, or Satellite/Foreman.
    • Scripting and task automation using Bash or Python.
    • Monitoring, compliance, and patch management.
    • Strong documentation, change management, and collaboration skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree (AA or AS) in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field required; an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered.

  • 4–7 years of Linux systems engineering or administration experience in enterprise environments.

  • Proficiency in Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL), Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), and related management tools.

  • Experience with VMware vSphere, Dell VxRail, and associated monitoring and backup tools.

  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP) and authentication integrations (Active Directory, LDAP, Kerberos).

  • Experience with patch management, performance tuning, and incident response.

  • Relevant certifications (RHCSA/RHCE, VMware, Dell) preferred.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.
