BRMi is seeking a Junior Database Administrator to support the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Hosting and Storage Services On-Premise Cloud Support program. The Junior Database Administrator will assist in the administration, maintenance, monitoring, and support of enterprise database environments that host mission-critical biomedical research and business applications.

 

Working under the guidance of senior database engineers and administrators, this position will support database operations, performance monitoring, backup and recovery, patching, upgrades, security, and routine maintenance activities while ensuring the availability, integrity, and reliability of enterprise database systems supporting the NIH Integrated Hosting Platform.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the administration and maintenance of enterprise database environments.
  • Monitor database availability, performance, and capacity to ensure reliable system operations.
  • Support installation, configuration, patching, and upgrades of database software.
  • Assist with database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery activities.
  • Perform routine database maintenance including user account management, database health checks, and storage management.
  • Monitor database jobs, alerts, and scheduled maintenance activities.
  • Assist in troubleshooting database performance issues and resolving operational problems.
  • Support database migrations, refreshes, and system upgrades.
  • Create and maintain database documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and operational runbooks.
  • Assist with implementing database security controls, permissions, and access management.
  • Support configuration management, change management, and release management activities.
  • Coordinate with infrastructure, application, storage, and cybersecurity teams to support hosted applications.
  • Assist in monitoring database backups and validating successful recovery operations.
  • Participate in scheduled maintenance windows and provide after-hours support as required.
  • Perform other database administration duties supporting enterprise hosting services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education, technical training, and experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience supporting enterprise database administration or database operations.
  • Experience supporting Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or similar relational database platforms.
  • Experience performing database monitoring, backup, recovery, and routine maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts.
  • Experience supporting Windows and Linux server environments.
  • Familiarity with database security, user administration, and access controls.
  • Experience documenting technical procedures and operational activities.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative technical team.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a NIH Public Trust 

Desired:

  • Experience supporting NIH, HHS, or other Federal Government IT environments.
  • Experience with Oracle Enterprise Manager, SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), or comparable database management tools.
  • Familiarity with database replication, high availability, and disaster recovery concepts.
  • Experience supporting cloud-hosted database environments in AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Knowledge of ITIL service management processes.
  • Experience with scripting languages such as PowerShell, Bash, or Python.
  • Familiarity with enterprise monitoring and ticketing tools.
  • Oracle Database Administration Certified Associate (OCA)
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate
  • CompTIA Data+
  • ITIL 4 Foundation
