Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Mainframe Automation Engineer to design, develop, and support enterprise automation solutions across complex z/OS environments. This role will focus heavily on IBM System Automation for z/OS, REXX, and NetView to improve system availability, reduce manual intervention, and increase operational reliability.

 

The ideal candidate will have deep hands-on experience automating critical mainframe systems and applications, including CICS, Db2, IMS, JES, MQ, and related infrastructure. This individual will also provide technical leadership, identify opportunities for automation and process improvement, and help develop scalable, self-healing solutions supporting high-availability business services.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, implement, and maintain enterprise automation solutions within IBM z/OS environments.
  • Administer and configure IBM System Automation for z/OS, including automation policies, managed resources, automation definitions, resource dependencies, and SA policy databases.
  • Develop advanced REXX programs, command processors, automation routines, operational tools, and scripts.
  • Develop and maintain IBM NetView automation, including automation tables, command lists, PIPEs, message processing, event handling, and policy-driven automation.
  • Design and support automation across z/OS subsystems and middleware platforms, including CICS, Db2, IMS, JES2/JES3, MQ, and TCP/IP.
  • Develop automation supporting CICS availability, health monitoring, startup, shutdown, restart, and recovery.
  • Design high-availability, recovery, restart, and self-healing automation solutions for critical systems and applications.
  • Support automation within Parallel Sysplex and cross-system environments.
  • Develop and support workload automation using IBM Workload Scheduler (IWS/TWS/ZWS).
  • Develop automation involving z/OS UNIX System Services (USS/OMVS), UNIX processes, and shell scripting.
  • Integrate automation with enterprise monitoring and event management platforms such as IBM OMEGAMON, ServiceNow, and Moogsoft.
  • Monitor and support mainframe and distributed systems, infrastructure platforms, and business applications.
  • Identify opportunities to automate manual operational processes across IBM z/Series, UNIX, and Windows environments.
  • Investigate operational, technical, and business problems, analyze requirements, and recommend reliable automation solutions.
  • Troubleshoot complex automation, system, application, and infrastructure issues.
  • Improve automation standards, processes, documentation, and operational procedures.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to team members and mentor less experienced engineers.
  • Communicate complex automation and system information to technical teams, business partners, and leadership.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience supporting enterprise mainframe and z/OS environments.
  • Expert-level experience with IBM System Automation for z/OS.
  • Advanced REXX programming experience within enterprise mainframe environments.
  • Strong hands-on experience with IBM NetView, including automation tables, message automation, command lists, PIPEs, and event processing.
  • Strong experience automating z/OS subsystems and middleware, including CICS, Db2, IMS, JES2/JES3, MQ, and TCP/IP.
  • Experience developing automation for CICS availability, recovery, startup, shutdown, restart, and health monitoring.
  • Strong knowledge of Parallel Sysplex environments and cross-system automation.
  • Strong working knowledge of JCL, SDSF, TSO/ISPF, and general z/OS operations.
  • Experience with IBM Workload Scheduler, including IWS, TWS, and/or ZWS.
  • Familiarity with z/OS UNIX System Services (USS/OMVS) and UNIX shell scripting.
  • Experience integrating automation with monitoring and event management platforms.
  • Experience supporting high-availability, recovery, restart, and self-healing automation solutions.
  • Experience identifying and implementing automation opportunities across mainframe and distributed environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to reduce manual intervention and improve system availability, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills within complex production environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and guide technical team members.
  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation as required.

Desired:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with OMEGAMON situation development, alerting, and monitoring customization.
  • Experience with GDPS and disaster recovery automation.
  • Experience with SMP/E maintenance and general z/OS system programming concepts.
  • Familiarity with Ansible and infrastructure automation.
  • Familiarity with REST APIs and API-based integrations.
  • Familiarity with mainframe modernization technologies and approaches.
  • Current knowledge of industry standards, emerging technologies, and automation best practices
