Overview

BRMi is seeking a Mid-to-Senior Level Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to support a large financial services client in Vienna, VA.

The SDET will join a Digital Delivery team responsible for developing and supporting modern, secure, and scalable digital experiences across web, mobile, and cloud-based platforms. The team builds modern user interfaces and microservices supporting multi-device and multi-platform applications using open-source technologies and Microsoft Azure.

 

This is a hands-on engineering and test automation role requiring strong Java development skills and full-stack testing experience across user interfaces, APIs, services, and databases. The SDET will work closely with software engineers, product teams, business stakeholders, and cloud engineering teams to design and implement automated testing solutions throughout the software development lifecycle.

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining automation frameworks, creating and executing automated and manual tests, validating functional and non-functional requirements, troubleshooting application and automation issues, and helping ensure production releases meet established quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, execute, and maintain automated testing solutions for complex web, mobile, API, microservices, and database-driven applications.
  • Develop automation code and test utilities using Java and applicable testing frameworks and tools.
  • Own end-to-end testing activities for applications of moderate to high complexity, including test strategy, test planning, test case design, automation development, execution, defect analysis, and release validation.
  • Develop and maintain automated smoke, functional, regression, integration, and end-to-end test suites across UI, API/service, and database layers.
  • Build, enhance, and maintain reusable test automation frameworks supporting multiple application platforms, including web, mobile, and desktop environments.
  • Develop automated acceptance tests based on business requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria.
  • Work alongside software developers and business stakeholders to incorporate automated testing throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Perform API and service-level testing, including validation of requests, responses, integrations, data, error handling, and business logic.
  • Perform UI automation testing for web and mobile applications using tools such as Selenium and Appium.
  • Perform backend and database validation using SQL queries and other appropriate data-validation techniques.
  • Develop and execute manual test cases when requirements or scenarios cannot be effectively validated through automation.
  • Support mobile application test automation across Android and/or iOS platforms.
  • Perform functional, integration, regression, system, and other applicable forms of software testing.
  • Support non-functional testing activities, including application and service performance testing.
  • Develop and execute performance tests using JMeter or comparable tools.
  • Analyze project documentation, technical requirements, user stories, customer needs, and product objectives to develop comprehensive test scenarios.
  • Identify, document, track, troubleshoot, and assist with the resolution of application defects and automation failures.
  • Work with software engineers to troubleshoot and remediate automation issues across development, testing, and deployment environments.
  • Debug application, test automation, integration, and environment issues and assist development teams in identifying root causes.
  • Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub, Jenkins, and related DevOps technologies.
  • Support cloud-hosted testing environments and platforms, including Microsoft Azure and tools such as Perfecto.
  • Participate in code reviews, pull requests, and other software engineering quality practices.
  • Apply Test-Driven Development (TDD), Behavior-Driven Development (BDD), and other modern software development and testing practices where appropriate.
  • Participate in Scrum ceremonies, including daily standups, sprint planning, backlog refinement, sprint reviews, and retrospectives, ensuring quality engineering considerations are incorporated throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with development, product, business, infrastructure, security, and cloud teams to ensure applications meet functional and technical quality requirements.
  • Support existing software applications, including application issue analysis and resolution, configuration, security and permissions management, and user support as needed.
  • Evaluate existing testing processes and identify opportunities to improve automation coverage, reliability, efficiency, and maintainability.
  • Advocate for test automation and quality engineering improvements and communicate recommendations to technical leadership and management.
  • Help establish and promote software testing, automation, and quality engineering standards and best practices.
  • Support production release readiness and help ensure final application quality prior to deployment.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on professional experience in software development, Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), quality engineering, or test automation.
  • 4+ years of professional software test automation experience, including designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining automation frameworks.
  • 2+ years of experience with API automation testing.
  • 2+ years of experience with mobile application test automation across Android and/or iOS environments.
  • Strong hands-on Java development and coding experience.
  • Strong experience developing functional automation across both UI and API/service layers.
  • Demonstrated full-stack automation testing experience spanning UI, API/services, and database/backend systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Selenium and Java-based automation scripting.
  • Experience with Java testing frameworks such as JUnit and/or TestNG.
  • Experience with API testing and automation tools and frameworks.
  • Experience with mobile automation technologies such as Appium.
  • Hands-on SQL experience, including writing queries to validate application data and backend processing.
  • Experience developing and maintaining smoke, functional, regression, integration, and end-to-end automated test suites.
  • Strong understanding of the Software Testing Life Cycle (STLC) and Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
  • Experience with a broad range of testing techniques and test types, including functional, integration, regression, system, API, database, mobile, and performance testing.
  • Experience with performance testing tools such as JMeter.
  • Experience with TDD and BDD methodologies and tools such as Cucumber.
  • Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with GitHub, Jenkins, or comparable source control and CI/CD technologies.
  • Working knowledge of Git workflows, including pull requests, branching, merging, and code reviews.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum software development environments.
  • Experience with cloud technologies, preferably Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience utilizing cloud-hosted testing platforms such as Perfecto.
  • Experience working with issue tracking or service management platforms such as Jira or ServiceNow.
  • Strong debugging, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, and software design patterns.
  • Ability to understand application architecture and data flows across front-end, service/API, and database layers.
  • Ability to translate technical and business requirements into comprehensive test scenarios and automated test solutions.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify testing gaps, application risks, and opportunities to improve automation coverage.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical teams, business stakeholders, and leadership.
